Johan Smith grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe. He began his artistic career with ceramics, being selected for both Regional and National exhibitions by the South African Potters Association. Later, he began experimenting with watercolour, etching and pastels, and in 1995 he started practicing art professionally. The vitality, boldness and versitility of oils intrigued him and thus became his sole passion.
Johan's self-taught, distinctive style is characterised by thin applications of oil, resembling airbrush work, contrasting with areas of thick impsto, and scratching through paint to create perspective and texture.
Love for photography and nature serve as his main source of inspiration. His landscapes are uncomplicated with little detail resulting in a quiet and undisturbed interpretation of African views. In contrast, his florals are colourful, prolific and abundant. Johan's work has been included in a number of corporate and public collections and has received widespread recognition.
